Getting active at work has taken on a new meaning at Blue Shield health insurance company in California. The company installed a walking workstation, where employees can sign up to spend an hour at a time walking on a treadmill while working.
The height of multi-tasking, the “walking workstation” features a computer, telephone and other items normally found at an office desk; the difference is, employees walk at a relaxed 2mph pace while completing their work. Employees can sign up for the program, which allows them to walk twice a week, for an hour at a time.
The program is aimed at helping employees stay fit and active, ultimately reducing sick days and preventable obesity-related illness. It sounds like it has also improved morale – there is a waiting list for the program, and the “walking workstation” is typically occupied all day, every day.
