Could sitting at our desks all day be bad for our health? According to experts, the answer is yes! In a previous Benefits World article, “Sit Up Straight and Take Notice,” we mentioned the American Cancer Society’s research which found that sitting for more than 6 hours per day increased your chances of premature death. A new article in the Vancouver Sun reinforces those findings.

According to experts, in order to keep our metabolism functioning correctly, we need “regular, constant, light to moderate physical activity.” It turns out, standing at our desks may be the answer.

Some innovative workplaces have taken this advice to heart, offering “sit and stand” desks, which allow workers to adjust the height of the desk for both sitting and standing. It’s a novel idea – one that experts hope will catch on. Some experts are even calling sitting the ‘new’ smoking; a common sight in the workplace that will eventually be taboo.
